The Crisis Intervention Training Refresher course reviews the significant concepts of proper handling of emotionally-disturbed and/or mentally ill persons and episodes of violent or potentially violent behavior.  This course includes discussion on case studies and illustrations, as well as interaction with students to advance “best practices.” Safety techniques and communications skills will be practiced and the course is designed to enable students to share personal incident experiences and observations for the purpose of advancing knowledge and skills.

Course Description:  De-Escalation Techniques – This training course satisfies the TCOLE mandate following the passage of the Sandra Bland Act (SB 1849) by the Texas Legislature in 2017 requiring all Basic Proficiency Certified Texas Peace Officers to complete TCOLE #1849 every 48 months & all officers obtaining either an intermediate or advanced certificate. This module provides first responding police officers with the tools, skills, and options they need to successfully and safely defuse a range of critical incidents.

The class will also be discussing internal agency issues, stress in the work place, stress confronting the individual officer, fight or flight reactions, some inappropriate approaches to coping with stress, and alcohol and drug abuse as a coping mechanism. Officers will also learn how to use self-hypnosis to manage these and other stress issues.
